Choosing the right tires for your minivan camper is more important than most people think. The tires are the only thing connecting your vehicle to the road. Bad tires can ruin a trip or cause a dangerous situation. After experimenting with several types on my Honda Odyssey, here is what I have learned about choosing tires for camping and daily driving.
All-Season vs All-Terrain
All-season tires are the standard choice for minivans. They work well on paved roads, have low road noise, and cost less. All-terrain tires offer better traction on gravel, dirt, and light mud. They are noisier on the highway and cost more, but they give you confidence on forest roads and campsites. I switched from all-season to all-terrain and I am not going back.
Tire Size and Load Rating
When choosing tires, pay attention to the size and load rating. Minivans need tires that can carry the weight of passengers and cargo. The stock size for a 2002 Honda Odyssey is 215/65R16. I upgraded to 225/70R16 for a slightly taller sidewall, which gives better comfort on rough roads. Make sure the load rating matches or exceeds the original equipment.
Tire Maintenance Tips
Check tire pressure before every trip. Underinflated tires wear faster and reduce fuel economy. Rotate tires every 5,000 miles to ensure even wear. Replace tires when the tread depth reaches 4/32 inch for all-season or 6/32 inch for all-terrain. Carry a plug kit and air compressor for emergency repairs on the road.
