My name is Tasinato. I moved to the United States a few years back with not much more than a suitcase and a plan to start over. Like a lot of people in that situation, I needed a car that would not break the bank but could handle everything life threw at it. That is how I ended up with a beat-up 2002 Honda Odyssey with 180,000 miles on the clock and a check engine light that came on every other Tuesday.
That van was ugly. The hood did not match the body, the sliding door made a noise like a dying animal, and the transmission felt like it was shifting through wet cement. But it was mine. And instead of treating it like a temporary beater, I decided to turn it into something I could actually live out of.
I started small. Fixed the transmission fluid, changed the spark plugs, replaced the alternator. Then I got ambitious. I built a wooden sleeping platform in the back for under a hundred bucks. Installed a cheap inverter and a deep cycle battery so I could charge my phone and run a fan at night. Bought a Mr. Heater Buddy for cold nights. Made window covers from Reflectix and cardboard. The first time I slept in it, parked by a lake in upstate New York, I woke up to frost on the windshield and a warm sleeping bag. That was the moment I got hooked.
I have made plenty of mistakes along the way. Bought the wrong gauge wire twice. Drilled a hole through the roof trying to mount a solar panel. Almost set off the fire extinguisher inside the van testing a new heater setup. But every mistake taught me something, and every fix made the van a little more livable.
