DIY 12V Electrical System for Car Camping

Building a 12V electrical system for your minivan camper is easier than most people think. With a deep cycle battery, a few wires, and basic tools, you can have power for lights, phone charging, a fridge, and even a laptop. This guide walks through everything I learned from building my own system in a 2002 Honda Odyssey.

What You Will Need

  • Deep cycle battery (AGM or lithium) – $100 to $300
  • Battery isolator or charge controller – $30 to $80
  • Fuse block with fuses – $20
  • Wire (10 AWG and 12 AWG) – $30
  • LED lights, USB outlets, switches – $40
  • Multimeter, wire strippers, crimpers – $30

Total cost: around $250 to $500 depending on battery choice. Lithium batteries cost more but last longer and weigh less.

Step 1: Choose Your Battery

AGM batteries are the most common choice for budget builds. They cost about $100 for a 100Ah battery, do not leak, and require no maintenance. Lithium batteries like LiFePO4 cost $300 or more but are half the weight and last three times longer. For a weekend camping setup, an AGM battery works fine. For full-time travel, go lithium.

Step 2: Wire It Up

Run 10 AWG wire from your car battery through a fuse to the isolator. From the isolator, run wire to your house battery. Connect the negative terminal of the house battery to the chassis ground. Install a fuse block near the house battery and run 12 AWG wire to your lights and outlets. Use marine-grade wire for durability.

Step 3: Add a Solar Panel (Optional)

A 100W solar panel on the roof keeps your battery charged during the day. Connect it through a charge controller to the house battery. This is a game-changer for extended trips. With solar, you never have to worry about draining your starter battery.

Step 4: Test Everything

Use a multimeter to check voltage at every connection. The house battery should read 12.6V or higher when fully charged. Test each outlet and light before buttoning everything up. Label your fuse block so you know which circuit is which.

Complete your setup with a sleeping platform and proper tires for off-grid camping.
