Essential Setup
At minimum you need: a sleeping platform (see our guide on building one for under 00), window covers for privacy and insulation, and a way to organize your gear. Everything else is optional and can be added as you go.
Window Covers
Privacy is important when sleeping in a van. The cheapest option is Reflectix insulation cut to fit your windows. It blocks light, provides insulation, and costs about 0 for a roll. For a more finished look, buy custom covers from WeatherTech or make fabric-covered panels.
Power for Camping
A portable power station like the EcoFlow Delta Mini or Jackery Explorer is ideal. These units can charge your devices, run a small fan, and power LED lights for several days. Pair it with a foldable solar panel for unlimited off-grid power.
Cooking Setup
A single-burner propane stove is cheap, reliable, and easy to use. Cook outside when possible to avoid smells inside. A collapsible silicone bowl, spork, and a small pot are all you really need. For coffee, a French press or pour-over setup works great.
Staying Organized
Use stackable plastic bins under your sleeping platform. Pack clothes in compression cubes. Keep kitchen gear in a dedicated tote. The key is having a place for everything so setup and breakdown take minutes, not hours.

Dispersed camping on public lands is free and legal in most national forests. Walmart parking lots allow overnight stays in many locations. Campgrounds with amenities cost 5-40 per night. Apps like iOverlander and FreeRoam help you find free campsites.
